What is a Rhinoplasty?

Commonly referred to as a “nose job”, cosmetic nose surgery can include a variety of aesthetic and reconstructive techniques to improve breathing and the appearance of the nose, leading to a refreshed facial first impression. The procedure can be performed as a closed rhinoplasty or an open rhinoplasty.

Patients who seek more minor changes in their nose, like correcting a drooping tip or dorsal bumps, can be treated with a closed technique (i.e. incisions limited to the inside of the nostrils), but when patients need larger or more complicated changes, open rhinoplasty is used.

Using either technique during your nose reshaping, the skin is elevated and the nasal bones and cartilage are altered.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Types of Rhinoplasty

Various types of rhinoplasty procedures will be recommended to patients based on their individual concerns, needs, and goals. Some are outlined below:

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

The centralized location of the nose accounts for why this one structure plays such a pivotal role in determining facial attractiveness. A malformed or unbalanced nose can skew the symmetry of the entire face. which is why rhinoplasty (a.k.a. nasal reshaping surgery or “nose job”) is often performed for cosmetic purposes to surgically enhance the shape and size of the nose, thereby improving the patient’s overall facial aesthetics and desirability.

At Aviva Cosmetic & Laser Clinic, cosmetic rhinoplasty patients generally seek rhinoplasty for one or more of the following nasal aesthetic problems:

  • A nose that is too small, too wide, too narrow, or too large
  • Asymmetrical, crooked, or off-center nose
  • Bump or depression on the bridge of the nose
  • Drooping upturned, or undefined nasal tip
  • Misshapen or broken nose after trauma or injury
  • Nostrils that are flared, upturned, or too wide

Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional nose surgery is a reconstructive surgery that is used when obstructions in our nasal passages cause turbulent airflow which dries out our nose and causes nasal breathing problems. The most common cause of turbulent airflow is a deviated septum.

When a patient’s nose has partial or complete obstructions in their nasal passages (whether they are aware of it or not), it can be a lifelong problem. A deviated septum can affect anyone with varying degrees of deviation and could create secondary consequences such as:

  • Deviation of the vomer and anterior ethmoids
  • Enlargement of the turbinates
  • Maxillary, ethmoid, or frontal sinus disease
  • Functional rhinoplasty performed in Boston is often a series of techniques that opens up the nasal function and returns nasal airflow to normal.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision procedures can be utilized for numerous reasons. Some patients may feel that their previous rhinoplasty did not bring their aesthetic goals to fruition, while others are still struggling with structural breathing complications or facial asymmetry because of improper rhinoplasty techniques from their plastic surgeons during their initial surgery.

Many of our patients request our surgeons’ assistance to address and resolve one or more of the potential rhinoplasty complications listed below:

  • The nose size appears disproportionate to the adjacent facial features, thus skewing the balance and symmetry of the entire face.
  • The nasal shape appears misaligned or has an unnatural shape.
  • The primary rhinoplasty surgeon employed standardized, archaic surgical techniques, causing a build-up of nasal scar tissue that distorted the outcome, resulting in a “botched nose job”.
  • The patient is experiencing unexpected breathing problems after their surgery.

Candidates
Who are the Best Candidates for a Rhinoplasty Procedure?

You might be a candidate if you suffer from cosmetic or functional problems related to your nose. At Aviva Cosmetic & Laser Clinic we can correct both types of issues during nose surgery. When the procedure is performed for purely cosmetic reasons, the goal is often a reduction in nostril size, removal of a prominent hump, refinement of the tip, or improvement in the symmetry of the nasal bridge. When the procedure is performed for mainly functional reasons, the goal is often the repair of a deviated septum to improve breathing. Sometimes, the procedure might be performed for both aesthetic and functional reasons.

Therefore, we believe good candidates for Rhinoplasty are patients with the following conditions:

  • Controlled alcohol intake
  • No smoking
  • Fully formed facial features
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery
  • No underlying serious health issues to prevent normal recovery
  • A fully formed nose (13 or 14 years old in girls, 14 or 15 years old in boys)

Facial issues related to low self-esteem can be corrected by surgery, but it is important not to make your decision on this alone. During a consultation session, your assigned surgeon will talk extensively about the benefits of Otoplasty with you, and learn more about your desired outcomes, to help make a more accurate determination of your candidacy.

What’s the first step?

The first step towards achieving your ideal nose shape through Rhinoplasty in Toronto, Canada is to schedule a consultation with a provider.

Although Rhinoplasty involves only a small part of the face, it is one of the most complex plastic surgery treatments. Therefore, we take the time to thoroughly prepare our patients for this procedure. We first evaluate the patient’s medical history, overall health, and nasal structures. We then ask each Toronto Rhinoplasty patient to explain his or her aesthetic expectations and wishes. Working together with the patient, we develop an individualized treatment plan that reflects the patient’s unique cosmetic needs, concerns, and preferences.

Throughout the preparation process at Aviva Cosmetic & Laser Clinic, we encourage our patients to ask as many questions as they can think of. By answering patient questions and providing detailed explanations of every proposed procedure, we alleviate patient anxiety and promote a sense of relaxation and calmness.

What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Depending on the extent of reshaping required, we will perform either open or closed nasal surgery. When performing open Rhinoplasty, we create an incision across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils). This incision allows us to open the nose and reshape the bone and cartilage. Once the incision heals, it is barely noticeable, as it can only be seen from underneath the nose.

During closed Rhinoplasty surgery, incisions are placed only inside the nose. This form is less invasive. However, it is generally not appropriate if extensive nasal reshaping is desired. The best technique for each nasal surgery patient can be determined only during a personal consultation with our surgeon.

After the surgery is completed, the nose will be bandaged with a special splint. Most patients experience some swelling and bruising during the next few weeks, as well as some discomfort caused by the swelling. However, any pain can usually be managed with prescription medications. We remain in close contact with all of our patients during the recovery period, and we encourage them to contact us immediately if any unusual symptoms occur.

Aviva
Rhinoplasty Recovery

Surgical Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, which means you can rest and recover comfortably in your home on the same day as your nose surgery. After surgery, you will be monitored in our recovery room until your provider decides that you are safe to be discharged. You will need a family member or friend available to drive you home in case you are still feeling some of the effects of sedation.

You can expect your recovery to take between one and two weeks, with some bruising and swelling around the eyes and cheeks, along with some mild discomfort and stuffiness the first week. As you recover, it’s important to keep your head elevated to achieve the best results. Due to the swelling, patients may temporarily notice blocked nasal passages and congestion, which will diminish on their own as healing continues.

Most of the swelling and bruising subsides within a few weeks, at which time most patients can resume all of their daily activities. However, the final results of Rhinoplasty might not become apparent until one year has passed due to minor residual swelling. Once the healing process is completed, the results of nose surgery are permanent.
