What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery
Depending on the extent of reshaping required, we will perform either open or closed nasal surgery. When performing open Rhinoplasty, we create an incision across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils). This incision allows us to open the nose and reshape the bone and cartilage. Once the incision heals, it is barely noticeable, as it can only be seen from underneath the nose.
During closed Rhinoplasty surgery, incisions are placed only inside the nose. This form is less invasive. However, it is generally not appropriate if extensive nasal reshaping is desired. The best technique for each nasal surgery patient can be determined only during a personal consultation with our surgeon.
After the surgery is completed, the nose will be bandaged with a special splint. Most patients experience some swelling and bruising during the next few weeks, as well as some discomfort caused by the swelling. However, any pain can usually be managed with prescription medications. We remain in close contact with all of our patients during the recovery period, and we encourage them to contact us immediately if any unusual symptoms occur.

Rhinoplasty Recovery
Surgical Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, which means you can rest and recover comfortably in your home on the same day as your nose surgery. After surgery, you will be monitored in our recovery room until your provider decides that you are safe to be discharged. You will need a family member or friend available to drive you home in case you are still feeling some of the effects of sedation.
You can expect your recovery to take between one and two weeks, with some bruising and swelling around the eyes and cheeks, along with some mild discomfort and stuffiness the first week. As you recover, it’s important to keep your head elevated to achieve the best results. Due to the swelling, patients may temporarily notice blocked nasal passages and congestion, which will diminish on their own as healing continues.
Most of the swelling and bruising subsides within a few weeks, at which time most patients can resume all of their daily activities. However, the final results of Rhinoplasty might not become apparent until one year has passed due to minor residual swelling. Once the healing process is completed, the results of nose surgery are permanent.
