What is Photo Rejuvenation (IPL – Intense Pulsed Light) used for? Photo Rejuvenation treatments are commonly used for:
- Removing sun spots, or age spots
- Lightening brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, and hands or other areas of the body
- Reducing redness, rosacea, dilated blood vessels and “broken” blood vessels on the face, neck and chest
- Helping to control flushing
- Mildly improving skin texture through collagen stimulation
- Mildly improving pore size by temporarily reducing oiliness
How does it work? IPL non-laser technology, which supplies a broad spectrum of light that reaches deep down to the collagen level of the skin to produce remarkable results. The therapeutic light energy is transformed to heat energy. The target tissue is then fragmented and absorbed without damage to the surrounding skin. The skin surface is left smooth and rejuvenated. How does the treatment improve the appearance of blood vessels, rosacea, and age spots/freckles? The IPL shoots out a range of lights that are tuned and targeted at the red blood cells (hemoglobin) in blood vessels or the brown pigments (melanin) in freckles or age spots that are being treated. The light beams are absorbed by the melanin, causing damage to the pigment; or the hemoglobin, causing damage to the blood vessels. These damaged vessels or pigments are then absorbed by the body, making them invisible on the surface. How will my skin look immediately following a Photo Rejuvenation treatment? After IPL skin rejuvenation, the skin will initially feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn sensation, and the treated area will remain pink for 2 or 3 hours. Some mild swelling may occur; this is transient and will subside 2 days following the treatment. If treating pigmented conditions, the pigment will become darker and will remain dark for 3 – 4 days. Four days following treatment, the darkened pigment will gradually shed from the skin, and new pigment-free skin will emerge. Spider veins and broken capillaries clear almost immediately following the treatment and continue to improve. Do I have to stay out of the sun? It is important to protect your skin from direct sun exposure over the series of your treatments and it is highly recommended to use a SPF 30+ sunblock. Solariums and sun bathing are to be avoided. Photo Rejuvenation treatments can be carried out all year round as long as you are not planning to be in full sun exposure immediately following a treatment.
