Preparing for Your Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast Reconstruction Surgery: How Is It Performed?

We use several reconstruction methods, including flap reconstruction and implant reconstruction. During flap reconstruction, tissue is taken from another part of your body, typically your buttocks or lower abdomen, and transplanted to your chest to create the breast mound. This technique is generally appropriate for patients who have enough skin and fatty tissue for the harvesting of an appropriate flap.

During breast implant reconstruction, we reconstruct the breast by using an implant. This technique is performed in two stages. First, we insert a tissue expander in the chest. The expander gradually expands the skin that will cover the new breast. When this phase is completed, an implant is placed within the newly created breast mound.

Both the implant and flap reconstructive surgeries are completed with the creation of a nipple and areola (the darker sin around the nipple) through various techniques, such as permanent tattooing. The ultimate goal of all of these methods is to create a breast that looks as natural as possible.
